Job Satisfaction Survey 2

The Job Satisfaction Survey 2 (JSS-2) is a commercial version of the popular JSS that improves upon the original scale. It can only be used by paying a licensing fee. The original JSS was developed for use in human and social services. The JSS-2 was designed and developed for a broader working population and it has superior psychometric properties, including improved internal consistency reliability (coefficient alpha), and cleaner factor structure. Norms have been developed more systematically on samples that represent a broad cross-section of occupations.

Why Measure Job Satisfaction?

Many companies benchmark how employees feel about their jobs, doing periodic surveys of engagement and job satisfaction. This is because the job satisfaction of employees is linked to many important organizational outcomes including attendance, employee misbehavior, job performance, stress, and turnover. Job satisfaction can affect the bottom line, which is why it can be important to track employee satisfaction to identify problem areas that need management attention.

Structure of the Job Satisfaction Survey 2

The JSS-2 assesses 7 facets of work and contains an 8th general satisfaction scale. The facets are

  1. Salary: Amount of pay and pay policies.
  2. Promotion Opportunities: Chances to be promoted.
  3. Supervision. Focuses primarily on direct supervisor.
  4. Fringe Benefits. Benefits provided other than salary.
  5. Coworkers. The people with whom the person works.
  6. Tasks. Enjoyment of the things done at work.
  7. Communication. How well employees are kept informed.
  8. General Satisfaction. The overall satisfaction with the job.

Psychometric Properties

The JSS was developed on 10 diverse samples with a combined sample size of more than 2100 people. Coefficient alphas for the 8 subscales are all above .90. Exploratory factor analysis of the 7 facet scales show little evidence of cross-loadings, and a confirmatory factor analysis for the 8 subscales showed good fit.
